Hi all,

After a long day travelling from Sagres we arrived in Taveria to find that we were unable to book accommodation anywhere in the town. After weighing up our options and searching through nearby hostels (using Hostelworld) we were able to locate free beds in a hostel down the road in Faro, 30mins west.

At the time the only accommodation available was at the Baixa-Portugal Terrace Hostel. Unsure of what to expect we drove to the hostel and wandered in (beware the hostel has minimal signage so look for the street number). What we found was probably one of the most up market hostels we have stayed in yet. The place was absolutely spotless, I think we were the only dirty thing in the hostel. Additionally, the furniture and kitchen areas in the hostel were of a significantly higher quality than that of your average hostel.

One of the best parts of the hostel was its terrace that sat above the hostel. This was an inviting space with ample seating area and a nice little kitchen/bar area. The feel on the terrace was fantastic, particularly at night when the weather is cooler and the area becomes nicely lit by fairy lights. The terrace serves as a perfect pre-dinner venue to catch up on the days proceedings and to have a few refreshing beverages. Further more, the lovely staff were more than happy to assist us with anything that we needed. We were pleasantly surprised at the room we were assigned, it was a 4 bed dorm with a balcony! – a first on my travels. Again the room was spotless with 4 lockers to store our valuables.

Personally I could not fault this hostel, however at the time it was a little quiet (compared to ‘party’ hostels) which suited us but may not suit others.

Cost: Accommodation €18 per night, €2 Washing, Beers/Soft Drinks €1, Breakfast & Wifi Included.
